TrustLayers was born out of Accountable Systems research conducted at MIT by Daniel Weitzner, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and Hal Abelson. These researchers believed access control and encryption were not capable of protecting privacy, and that laws and systems were needed to hold institutions accountable for the proper use of personal information. Working from these insights and research, TrustLayers was founded in 2013 to meet the demand for easy-to-use, actionable systems that protect against data misuse.
